SCIENCE FICTION FROM THE RADIO HUT
A Collection of Stories Written in a
Korean Rice Paddy
by
ROBERT W. BIRCH
![]()
In 1955, the author, Robert W. Birch, enlisted in the United States Army and, in 1957, was sent to a small radio detachment in Korea. It was a group of just fourteen enlisted men and one second lieutenant, fresh out of college ROTC. Eight of the men, including the author, were radio operators, trained in sending and receiving messages in Morse Code. Four radio huts sat on the backs of an equal number of two-and-a-half ton trucks, surrounded on all sides by rice paddies.
During his eighteen month tour of duty in Korea, Robert reached the rank of sergeant and became the noncommissioned officer in charge of operations. He still, however, took his share of late night shifts, sitting alone in a hut monitoring the radios. The nights were long and the nights were generally boring. It was while sitting at a very small desk in a very ramped radio hut that the author began typing out short science fiction stories on a big sluggish army typewriter.
For over fifty years these stories remained buried in a stack of old files. When rediscovered the paper was yellowed, but the stories still fresh. In 1957-58, when written, there had been no connection made between smoking and lung cancer, so a few of the characters casually light up. There were no personal computers, but a few were showing up mostly to analyze data punched into paper IBM punch cards. These computers were large, slow, rare and unsophisticated, but their potential was anticipate. There were no digital camera, and the cameras in the fifties used film and captured black and white images. Army typewriters, unlike today’s personal computers, did not have spell check to catch the occasional typo. Some corrections and fine-tuning were required, but the stories are basically those written by a twenty-one year old soldier sitting in a radio hut.
Robert would not again begin to write fiction until he retired in 1999, four decades after returning home from Korea.
